Today, Civil Eats announces two new senior reporters joining our editorial team, Nadra Nittle and Gosia Wozniacka.
Nadra Nittle is a Los Angeles-based journalist with a background reporting on a wide range of topics, including health, race, public policy, education, religion, and pop culture. She was most recently a reporter for The Goods by Vox and was also on staff at the former Vox Media website Racked. She has worked for newspapers affiliated with the Digital First Media and Gannett/USA Today networks and freelanced for a variety of media outlets, including The Atlantic, ThinkProgress, KCET, and About.com. In 2019, Enslow Publishing released her first book, Recognizing Microaggressions.
Nittle has also written about structural inequity for the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education with the goal of helping the news media improve its coverage of communities of color. Her political reporting has been featured in New America Media and the Santa Fe Reporter. She started her career with the El Paso Times, where she wrote about Ft. Bliss soldiers captured during the Iraq War.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to write about food justice for Civil Eats,” said Nittle. “I began my career as a health reporter, covering, among other issues, how food deserts contribute to high obesity rates in vulnerable communities I went on to write about education, including the efforts schools are taking to foster food equity—from launching campus gardens to doing away with student lunch debt.”
Gosia Wozniacka is a multilingual journalist with more than 15 years of experience. Most recently, Wozniacka worked for five years as a staff reporter for The Associated Press in Fresno, California, and then in Portland, Oregon. At the AP, she wrote extensively about agriculture, farmworkers, and immigration policy, as well as water and other environmental issues. She was previously the Immigration and Latino Affairs reporter for The Oregonian and her writing has also appeared in The Dallas Morning News, The San Francisco Chronicle, Pacific Standard magazine, and Poland’s largest daily, Gazeta Wyborcza, among other publications.
Wozniacka has worked as a journalism professor, nonfiction writing teacher, and writing coach/editor. After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston University, Wozniacka returned to her native Poland and began her journalism career in 2002 as a staff writer for the Polish daily Gazeta Wroclawska. She later went on to earn a master’s degree from the U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
Wozniacka, who resides in Oregon, co-runs a very small urban farm with her partner and dedicates her time to her family, cooking, and the outdoors. She’s excited to get back to writing about food—the way it’s grown, manufactured and consumed, and the challenges it gives rise to as it moves from soil to plate.
“The reporting published by Civil Eats on the topics of agriculture, farmworkers, and the food system is in-depth and comprehensive,” Wozniacka said. “I’m honored to join the team and look forward to contributing to the conversation.”
