The sustainable agriculture world is abuzz today with news of the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding an earlier lawsuit, brought by alfalfa farmers, that sought to stop any planting of Monsanto’s genetically engineered Roundup Ready alfalfa seed. Tuesday the Supreme Court heard its first oral argument involving genetically modified (GM) crops. Though the case, Monsanto Co. v. Geertson Seed Farms, has reignited the discussion over GM, or genetically engineered (GE) crops, it is still unclear what kind of impact the decision, which is expected by June, will have on the future of U.S. agriculture.
