<p>Last week, the National Academy of Sciences <a href="http://farmfutures.com/story.aspx/national-summit-focuses-herbicide-resistant-weeds-17/59757">hosted a summit</a> to discuss “superweeds,” or the widespread problem of herbicide-resistant weeds currently afflicting millions of farm acres across the United States.</p>
<p>Superweeds—the “<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-cka5s4AqE">weeds that man can no longer kill</a>!”—have been <a href="http://grist.org/industrial-agriculture/2011-09-09-superweeds-go-mainstream/">in the news</a> for <a href="http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/06/invasion-of-the-superweeds/">several years</a>. All across the Midwest and Southeast farmers have been photographed and filmed <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUt_pp3NUUc&amp;feature=related">standing in fields surrounded by the giant plants</a>. They bemoan the cost of pesticides and point to industrial rows of crops that don’t have a chance when up against feisty weeds that grow up to three inches a day.</p>
<p>Superweeds have been especially likely to appear alongside <a href="http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/food/genetically-engineered-foods/">genetically engineered (GE) crops</a>, which are engineered to withstand large amounts of pesticide and herbicide use. And these weeds show no sign of going away any time soon.<span id="more-14723"></span></p>
<p>That’s why scientists and researchers from land-grant universities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and representatives from several industry and trade groups met at last week’s summit to strategize about the problem.</p>
<p>A few speakers boasted about the efficiency of modern-day farming and the fact that today’s agriculture requires fewer farmers on more acres. But missing from their analysis was the long list of consequences: from degradation of the environment, to health risks from increased chemical use and, ironically, superweeds themselves.</p>
<p>Those who did address the weeds tended not to see them as a result of that impressive modern agriculture. Take Michael Owen, an agronomist from Iowa State University, for instance. In his talk, he contended that superweeds are neither an herbicide problem nor a GE crop problem, per se, but a behavioral problem. This analysis puts the blame on farmers for overusing herbicides. Yet the resistance situation first arose when biotechnology companies pushed herbicides like glyphosate (or Roundup) on farmers as the silver bullet to weed management without educating them on the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/05/03/business/weeds-graphic.html?ref=energy-environment">ramifications of their ubiquitous use</a>. And the practice of using just one herbicide year after year would not have occurred if it weren’t for the aggressive promotion of the Roundup Ready line of GE crops (engineered to tolerate Roundup).</p>
<p>There was some talk of non-chemical solutions by Michael Walsh from the University of Western Australia, who spoke about that country’s serious problem with a weed that has developed resistance to several herbicides. <a href="http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1614/WT-06-086.1">Australian researchers designed a few different weed seed control methods</a> that destroy the seed reserves, eliminating upwards of 95 percent of the seed before it is able to germinate. But it was made very clear by the U.S. farmers attending the summit that going back to traditional methods, like cultivation, would be tough. There was little mention of organic weed management techniques such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_rotation">crop rotation</a> or the use of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cover_crop">cover crops</a>.</p>
<p>But exhausting <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/10/us-agriculture-weeds-idUSBRE8491JZ20120510">chemical tool after chemical tool</a> in an arms race against herbicide resistant weeds is not only not sustainable, it’s not working. And despite the fact that chemical solutions are the cause of cross-resistance and multiple resistance in weeds, the need for more chemical solutions was still at the forefront of the discussion.</p>
<p>Strikingly missing from the conversation that day was any talk of the next round of GE crops now in the pipeline, like <a href="http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/food/genetically-engineered-foods/24-d-corn/">Dow’s 2,4-D corn</a> and Monsanto’s <a href="http://brownfieldagnews.com/2011/01/06/dicamba-tolerant-soybeans-take-step-forward/">dicamba soybean</a>, which have both been designed to be resistant to more than one herbicide at once. A full 13 out of 20 crops in the queue awaiting USDA’s approval have what are called “stacked herbicide resistance traits.”</p>
<p>These crops, once approved, will likely result in the use of many more gallons of herbicides and the evolution of even more powerful superweeds that will be resistant to many different herbicides—making them harder and harder to manage. Formulating new varieties of crops to withstand applications of harsher chemicals may be business as usual for these scientists and the companies they work for, but it’s an approach that ignores the underlying issue.</p>
<p>The final speaker at the summit was Iowa State University President Steven Leath, who said he believed that using a “land-grant approach” involving public-private partnerships will help solve this complex problem. This approach is not surprising coming from Leath; Iowa State is known for its relationships with corporations (<a href="http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2011/05/27/monsanto-endows-chair-at-isu/">especially Monsanto</a>), and its agronomy department received around <a href="http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/tools-and-resources/public-research-private-gain-corporate-influence-over-university-agriculture/">half of its funding</a> from private-sector donors from 2006 to 2010. Iowa State’s campus is even home to a Monsanto Student Services Wing in the main agriculture building.</p>
<p>The superweed problem is one that should be attacked with preventative strategies based in weed biology and independent, interdisciplinary creativity. But partnering with biotechnology companies will likely only result in biotech solutions.</p>
<p>We have the opportunity to see superweeds as a wake-up call and a strong argument for pulling agriculture off the chemical treadmill to which it is bound. But to do that, public research—free of private sector influence—must be funded in order to give farmers better alternatives and to shift the focus away from the current chemical arms race against weeds.</p>

<p>A new coalition is trying to throw sand in the gears of industrial agriculture’s chemical treadmill. And this one just may have what it takes to slow it down. I’m referring to the <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/24/us-usa-food-24-d-idUSBRE83N04I20120424">fight over USDA approval</a> for Dow AgroScience’s new genetically modified corn seeds (brand name “Enlist”), which are resistant to the herbicide 2,4-D.</p>
<p>This is part of biotech’s “superweed” strategy, by which they hope to address the fact that farmers across the country are facing <a href="http://livepage.apple.com/">an onslaught of weeds</a> impervious to the most popular herbicide in use, Monsanto’s glyphosate or RoundUp (and in some cases <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/WN/pig-weed-threatens-agriculture-industry-overtaking-fields-crops/story?id=8766404">impervious to machetes</a> as well!). Of course, this is a problem of the industry’s own making. It was overuse of glyphosate caused by the market dominance of Monsanto’s set of glyphosate-resistant genetically engineered seeds that put farmers in this fix in the first place.<span id="more-14583"></span></p>
<p>One of the older herbicides, 2,4-D is a pretty nasty chemical—it’s been <a href="http://www.panna.org/blog/24-d-corn-bad-idea-and-heres-why">linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, kidney and liver problems, reproductive effects, and shows endocrine disrupting potential</a>—which is one of the many reasons farmers prefer the more “benign” glyphosate. In fact, on the basis of the scientific evidence, especially related to human cancers, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) several years ago to withdraw its approval for 2,4-D. Earlier this month, the petition was <a href="http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/gsolomon/epa_decision_could_open_the_do.html">summarily denied</a>.</p>
<p>So it’s interesting to see this new coalition’s opposition to 2,4-D getting so much traction so quickly. Perhaps it’s because the group—dubbed <a href="http://saveourcrops.org/">Save Our Crops</a>—isn’t made up of environmentalists and sustainable agriculture types, but rather Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic conventional farmers and large food processors (and Organic Valley, the organic co-operative organization which is both a producer and a processor).</p>
<p>The basis of their concern isn’t so much the health effects, but the fact that their farms may end up as collateral damage from the increase in the use of 2,4-D that will occur if Dow’s seed is approved. After all, the use of glyphosate went <a href="http://grist.org/politics/usda-downplays-own-scientists-research-on-danger-of-roundup/">through the roof</a> once Monsanto’s RoundUp Ready seeds took over the marketplace. These farmers expect 2,4-D to follow the same path. (Rodale News <a href="http://www.rodale.com/24d-corn?cm_mmc=Twitter-_-Rodale-_-Content-RecentNews-_-9FavoritesUnderAttackGMOs">estimates</a> a 60 to 80 percent increase.)</p>
<p>The problem has to do with pesticide drift—an issue with many pesticides, but a particular problem with 2,4-D, which unlike glyphosate is highly volatile. While its volatility was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_Orange">in one context</a> considered a strength, at this point even Dow itself acknowledges that it’s a concern. In an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/26/business/energy-environment/dow-weed-killer-runs-into-opposition.html?smid=tw-nytimesbusiness&amp;seid=auto">article on the battle over the new seed’s approval</a>, <em>The New York Times</em> offers an illustration of what these farmers have to fear:</p>
<blockquote><p>To Jody Herr, it was a telltale sign that one of his tomato fields had been poisoned by 2,4-D, the powerful herbicide that was an ingredient in Agent Orange, the Vietnam War defoliant.</p>
<p>“The leaves had curled and the plants were kind of twisting rather than growing straight,” Mr. Herr said of the 2009 incident on his vegetable farm in Lowell, Ind. He is convinced the chemical, as well as another herbicide called dicamba, had wafted through the air from farms nearly two miles away.</p></blockquote>
<p>As explained by <a href="http://www.rodale.com/24d-corn?cm_mmc=Twitter-_-Rodale-_-Content-RecentNews-_-9FavoritesUnderAttackGMOs">Rodale News</a>, 2,4-D-resistant plants will alter the way farmers use the chemical, encouraging them to apply it later in the season to more kill weeds (you normally wouldn’t apply a herbicide on a field full of mature plants). This fact makes it particularly problematic since, as Rodale News put it:</p>
<blockquote><p>… not only are humidity and temperatures higher, but also neighboring tomato plants are leafing out, making them most susceptible to the drift. If the chemicals don’t outright kill plants like tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, peppers, and other favorites, they could cause severe twisting and other deformities to occur as the plants in the drift’s path grow, rendering the harvest useless.</p></blockquote>
<p>Which is just what farmer Herr saw in his field. Indeed, it is tomato farmers who may be the most at risk. Rodale also reports on a study produced by scientists at Ohio State University, which simulated the effects of 2,4-D drift on tomatoes [<a href="http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/weedworkshop/images/WeedManagementinHorticulturalCropsResearchResults2010.pdf">PDF</a>]:</p>
<blockquote><p>Experts found that the migrating pesticide vapors sparked late bloom, which diminishes the marketable red part of the tomato and stimulated growth of unmarketable green growth, which can’t be sold. In fact, just tiny amounts—1/300th of what was applied to field crops—caused significant field loss on neighboring tomato farms.</p>
<p>Ohio researchers concluded that realistic drift from corn or soy fields treated with either dicamba or 2,4-D will result in a 17 to 77 percent reduction in marketable fruit for neighboring farms and gardens.</p></blockquote>
<p>These are, of course, estimates from a simulation. But the farmers and processors behind Save Our Crops would rather not be the guinea pigs in the real-world version of this experiment.</p>
<p>For its part, Dow assures the USDA that its new version of 2,4-D doesn’t have the same volatility—and the company will “urge” farmers to use the new, branded version rather than the far less expensive generic version of 2,4-D that’s been on the market for decades. How reassuring.</p>
<p>Indeed that’s where I get worried. If I had to guess, I suspect that the USDA will approve Dow’s new seed but with restrictions on things like planting acreage and use of recommended formulations and so on (though there’s always the chance the agency will punt the final decision until after the election). In any event, restrictions are only as good as their enforcement, and the USDA doesn’t have an inspiring track record. Farmers have routinely <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/06/business/06corn.html">violated planting restrictions</a> on GM seeds in the past—while regulators have a history of <a href="http://motherjones.com/tom-philpott/2011/09/monsanto-denies-superinsect-science">acceding to industry’s demands</a> to reduce the restrictions rather than enforce them.</p>
<p>The public comment period on the 2,4-D-resistant seeds ends today. According to the Center for Food Safety <a href="http://truefoodnow.org/2012/04/26/usda-receives-over-365000-public-comments-opposing-approval-of-24-d-resistant-genetically-engineered-corn/">365,000 people have already submitted comments to the USDA</a>. An additional 143 farm, environmental, health, fisheries groups and companies will submit <a href="http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/24-D-Organizational-SignOn-Letter-FINAL-11.pdf" target="_blank">a letter to USDA </a>Secretary Tom Vilsack expressing their opposition to the GMO seeds. Save Our Crops has also already submitted two petitions [<a href="http://saveourcrops.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/FINAL-Petition-to-APHIS-041812-Electronic.pdf">PDF</a>] while the consumer group Just Label It is sponsoring <a href="http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50202/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=7574">its own petition</a> to protest USDA approval, so there’s still time for the public’s voice to be heard.</p>
<p>But the real fight appears to be between commodity farms who want a simple answer to the growing problem of superweeds and fruit and vegetable growers who don’t want to see their crops damaged as a consequence. The latter are often treated by the USDA as step-children while growers of the Big Five commodities—corn, soy, wheat, rice, and cotton—receive the overwhelming majority of federal farm subsidies.</p>
<p>I doubt that USDA approval of Dow’s new seed, if it comes, will be the end of the story. But it should tell us something that even some large conventional farmers are starting to get angry and scared by the direction industrial agriculture has taken.</p>

<p>A <a title="Mortensen article" href="http://www.jstor.org/pss/10.1525/bio.2012.62.1.12" target="_blank">new article in the respected journal <em>BioScience</em></a> raises important concerns about the harmful influence of genetically engineered herbicide resistant crops on sustainable weed control. As many others have also noted, the excessive reliance on glyphosate-based herbicides, such as Roundup, has resulted in the emergence and spread of many harmful weeds that can no longer be controlled by glyphosate. These weeds now infest millions of acres of farmland the U.S., resulting in <a title="Higher Herbicide Use" href="http://organicagcenter.ca/Docs/OrganicCenterUSA/13Years20091116.pdf" target="_blank">greater herbicide use</a>.</p>
<p>But the new article goes well beyond most previous work by providing insight into the state of weed control for major crops in the U.S., and how the current use of engineered herbicide resistant crops is driving agriculture toward reduced sustainability.<span id="more-14034"></span></p>
<h3>Old herbicides in a new package will cause environmental harm</h3>
<p>The authors make several important points to support their thesis. First, because of widespread resistance of several important weeds to glyphosate, companies are now working to commercialize crops resistant to several other herbicides, including the old herbicides dicamba and 2, 4-D. Crops resistant to these two herbicides are likely to be widely used because the herbicides they are immune to are more effective than others. This is bad news, because these herbicides can cause a lot of collateral damage to other crops and nearby natural areas. And natural areas are important for fostering biodiversity, such as pollinators and <a title="Ag Landscape Simplification Increases insecticide Use" href="http://www.pnas.org/content/108/28/11500.full.pdf+html" target="_blank">organisms that control pests and reduce insecticide use</a>.</p>
<p>Based in part on the pesticide/seed industry’s own analysis that both glyphosate and these other herbicides will be used together on engineered soybeans and corn, the authors of the article project total herbicide use to increase more than twofold over the next decade. Dicamba and 2, 4 – D are projected to increase almost tenfold.</p>
<p>And the likelihood of these herbicides moving off site and harming sensitive crops is much higher than for glyphosate—75 to 400 times greater in one comparison, although newer formulations may somewhat reduce this problem.  This spells trouble, especially when combined with several other factors that accompany herbicide-resistant crops, such as use of the herbicides later in the season when nearby susceptible crops and wild vegetation have leafed out and are more vulnerable to damage.</p>
<p>This in turn could lead to a further shift to the few crops that are resistant to these herbicides in an effort to avoid damage.</p>
<p>This kind of further simplification of agriculture is understood to be bad for the environment. And in parts of the country where corn and soybeans are widely grown, it could also impede the <a title="Market Forces" href="http://www.ucsusa.org/food_and_agriculture/solutions/big_picture_solutions/market-forces.html" target="_blank">growing demand for fresh local foods that have positive effects on jobs.</a></p>
<h3>Where have I heard this before?</h3>
<p>Increased herbicide use will surely lead to even more resistant weeds, some with resistance to both glyphosate and 2,4-D or dicamba (or all three), leaving even fewer options for farmers.</p>
<p>The industry has argued to the contrary that it is unlikely that weeds will develop resistance to these herbicides for several reasons…which the article adroitly refutes.</p>
<p>It is troubling that the industry is taking this “head-in-the-sand” attitude because, to the extent it is accepted, it may lead to lax policy by the government and lax practice by growers—that is, too little effort to prevent resistance or to promote sustainable alternatives.</p>
<p>It is particularly troubling because we have heard these irresponsible arguments before from an industry bent on maximizing its sale of products at the expense of the environment. The current article points out how spurious arguments where similarly made that weeds would not develop resistance to glyphosate, where to the contrary, the dramatic increase in resistant weeds is the driving force behind the new crops engineered for dicamba and 2, 4 – D resistance. <a title="Engineered Pest Problems" href="http://blog.ucsusa.org/engineered-pest-problems" target="_blank">And I have noted </a>that the industry is also trying to deny and <a title="Is this sustainable agricul;ture?" href="http://blog.ucsusa.org/is-this-sustainable-agriculture-resistance-to-engineered-bt-corn-on-the-rise" target="_blank">downplay the potential importance of emerging resistance</a> of corn rootworms to Bt.</p>
<h3>Undercutting sustainable agriculture</h3>
<p>The authors of the new article describe sustainable weed control practices that readers of this blog will find familiar—crop rotation, use of cover crops, crops and cropping practices that effectively compete with weeds, judicious use of tillage, and for non-organic systems, minimal and targeted use of herbicides.</p>
<p>These methods improve weed control and make it more sustainable, while reducing weed pressure.  That means that when herbicides are used, it is less likely that weeds will develop resistance to them. And organic systems, of course, don’t use herbicide at all.</p>
<p>So in the context of these better ways to control weeds, it is perhaps most troubling that the authors document the decline in, as they put it, “…the knowledge infrastructure needed to practice IWM [Integrated Weed Management] in the future…” And, I would add, harm to the research infrastructure that can improve IWM and make it even more efficient.</p>
<p>The authors document a shift in land grant institutions and USDA away from research on more sustainable types of agriculture, toward more emphasis on chemical controls and engineered crops. The dramatic shift of agricultural research funding from the public to the private sector, and the growing ties between academia and the biotech industry, also do not bode well for sustainable agriculture research and infrastructure.</p>
<p>The biotech and chemical industries have no interest in developing the kinds of knowledge- and ecology-based farming vital to a productive and sustainable agriculture that conserves resources and biodiversity, and which will be vital to confronting coming challenges of climate change and increasing population. The companies can’t sell this knowledge, so they are not interested in it.</p>
<h3>Sensible solutions</h3>
<p>The authors discuss several useful recommendations to make weed management more sustainable. These include mandatory herbicide resistance management imposed by EPA, which approves these chemicals (and I would add, by USDA, which approves herbicide resistant crops); fees on GE herbicide resistant crops and herbicides to discourage their overuse, and which could be plowed back into sustainable ag research; the fostering of partnerships between all stakeholders to develop better stewardship information for farmers and to advise them on sustainable agriculture practices; and more funding and incentives for sustainable agriculture research.</p>
<p>These important policies face a daunting uphill fight—one that UCS and our allies in the sustainable agriculture community will continue to wage. There is considerable resistance to this important agenda by the biotech and pesticide industry and its supporters in the government and academia.</p>
<p>The GE and pesticide industry have no inherent interest in promoting a truly sustainable farming system, and in fact such a system is antithetical to their narrow interests of selling as much herbicide and engineered herbicide-resistant seed as possible. The kinds of sustainable IWM supported in the article would greatly reduce the need for both herbicides and engineered seeds that these companies sell.</p>
<p>Instead, the strong public sector policies advocated by the authors will only come through ongoing and vigorous engagement to convince the public and its servants, who are lobbied heavily by these industries, that sustainable agriculture is critical to the health of our food supply, our environment, and rural communities.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A new <a href="http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/GMO-EMPEROR-FINAL-10-11.pdf" target="_blank">report</a> highlights scientific research and empirical experiences from around the globe demonstrating that genetically modified (GM) seeds and crops have failed to deliver on its advertised promises.</p>
<p>Advocates of GMOs claim that biotechnology increases yields, reduces chemical usage, controls crop pests and weeds, and delivers “climate ready” traits such as drought-tolerance. However, the on-the-ground experience in many countries discloses that this technology has failed on all fronts.<span id="more-13425"></span></p>
<p>For example, GMO proponents often hail the success of GM cotton in South Africa’s Makhatini Flats. But after initial, highly visible headlines of success, this report reveals a different story. Instead of thriving crops and increased farmer incomes, after five years, the majority of farmers growing GM cotton are in debt due to the high costs of seed, chemical, and other farm inputs. Concurrently, the volatility of the cotton market means that farmers cannot rely on predictable, steady incomes. The essays contained in this Global Citizens Report confirm that such experiences are repeated in many countries and regions. The story of Indian farmer indebtedness and over 250,000 suicides further emphasizes the tragic costs of this failed GM technology. (The essay from India thoroughly reviews this tragedy.)</p>
<p><strong>Super Weeds, Super Problems</strong></p>
<p>Farmers and agronomists throughout the world are alarmed by the growing epidemic of weeds developing a resistance to the herbicide, glyphosate, used on GM crops. These “superweeds” have evolved resistance to glyphosate as a result of the intensive use of this herbicide. From November 2007 to January 2011, infested acreage in the U.S. has more than quintupled, from 2.4 to 12.6 million acres. In Brazil, researchers have reported that nine species have developed tolerance to glyphosate.</p>
<p>And now super pests are also becoming a major hazard. Rootworms are developing a resistance to GM corn in Iowa and Illinois. And, Monsanto, the undisputed leader in GM seed and crop technology and ownership, has, after several years, finally acknowledged that a bollworm pest has developed resistance to its Bt cotton in India.</p>
<p>Another common story detailed in this Global Citizens Report describes how GM technology is pushed by intensive lobbying and marketing efforts, “revolving door” influences, and funding of research and educational institutes. As noted in the report from the U.S., the leading proponent of GM crops—top food and agricultural biotechnology firms spent more than $547 million lobbying Congress between 1999 and 2009. The report from Argentina documents that representatives from biotechnology corporations—Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow, and Pioneer—sit on a prominent national panel that directly advises the government agency that approves field trials and commercialization of GM crops.</p>
<p>Finally, the report documents increasing scientific evidence and warnings from scientists that GMOs may be harmful to human health, ecosystems and also have failed to increase food production. It highlights that, in contrast to GM seeds and crops, agroecological farming systems are proving to be the real answer to food insecurity. A recent study by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food reported that agroecological systems doubled crop yields over a period of three to 10 years in field tests conducted in 20 African countries. The report also cites numerous other studies confirming high yields and reduced chemical use in other regions of the world due to agroecological farming methods.</p>
<p>Owning at least 90 percent of GM seeds and crops, Monsanto is viewed as the leader in promoting this technology and thus its role is particularly highlighted in these voices from the planet reports.</p>
<p>The report will be launched around the world during 2011 and 2012, and began with a launch in San Francisco on October 13.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A new report out today, <a href="http://civileats.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/13Years20091112.pdf">Impacts of Genetically Engineered Crops on Pesticide Use in the United States: The First Thirteen Years</a> [pdf] authored by Dr. Charles Benbrook, chief scientist at <a href="http://www.organic-center.org" target="_blank">The Organic Center</a><a href="http://truefoodnow.org/" target="_blank"></a>, reveals that the use of genetically modified (GM) corn, soy and cotton crops has increased the amount of pesticides used in the past 13 years by 318 million pounds.</p>
<p>This information comes to light as the industry struggles to position itself as providing environmental benefit through use of bt technology &#8212; insecticide producing seeds &#8212; savings from which are diminished in light of a six times greater herbicide usage.<span id="more-5594"></span></p>
<p>Farmers have become increasingly critical of both GM seed as it goes up in price, and herbicides like Roundup, also known as glyphosate, as &#8216;<a href="http://www.france24.com/en/20090418-superweed-explosion-threatens-monsanto-heartlands-genetically-modified-US-crops" target="_blank">superweeds</a>&#8216; become prevalent in treated fields. The growth of pigweed, which can quickly reach widths of 6 inches at the stalk, and other invasive, glyphosate-resistant species increases farmers reliance on more high-risk herbicides, including 2,4-D, dicamba and paraquat, and has resulted in a return to hand harvesting and even abandoning of fields.</p>
<p>Dr. Benbrook used the USDA&#8217;s National Agriculture Statistics Service data and publicly available Monsanto information to ascertain these findings. The report states that it became increasingly difficult to get such information from the USDA as it ceased collecting thorough data on pesticide usage in the US in recent years. Furthermore, the USDA has never conducted research on the relationship between GM crops and increased pesticide use, resulting in a lack of in-depth information to inform regulators. (I wrote about <a href="http://civileats.com/2009/10/15/a-new-direction-on-research-at-the-usda-some-experts-weigh-in-on-what-we-need-to-know-now/" target="_blank">the need for more such research here</a>, where Dr. Benbrook also chimed in.)</p>
<p>The report challenges researchers and regulators to consider the following:</p>
<blockquote><p>Herbicides and insecticides are potent environmental toxins. Where GE crops cannot deliver meaningful reductions in reliance on pesticides, policy makers need to look elsewhere. In addition to toxic pollution, agriculture faces the twin challenges of climate change and burgeoning world populations. The biotechnology industry’s current advertising campaigns promise to solve those problems, just as the industry once promised to reduce the chemical footprint of agriculture. Before we embrace GE crops as solution to these new challenges, we need a sober, data-driven appraisal of its track record on earlier pledges.</p></blockquote>
<p>With glyphosate producer Monsanto encouraging farmers to diversify their herbicide use to control superweeds, this research shows that we could be at a turning point for Roundup Ready technology. As farmers realize the cost effectiveness of conventional seeds which deliver similar yields and allow seeds to be saved for reuse in future seasons, GM crops could prove a technological experiment gone wrong as we move toward creating a more durable and diverse food system.</p>
