“There is perfectly good, nutritious food out there that is not making it to people who could really benefit from it.” While most people are arguing that the agricultural problem we are facing is one of production, the real underlying issue is the system that does not support medium and small size farms and the need for more innovative means of distribution.

I don’t agree with the statement that we as consumers are causing this waste of produce by our insistence on perfection. I for one have no problem eating a bruised apple or a browning mango or a broken crown of broccoli. The general public has been conditioned to accept only unblemished produce not of their own volition but by the vendors of said produce, including restaurants, that have made this decision about what is acceptable. The only way to bring home the produce that is considered substandard (yet perfectly edible and tasty) is by dealing directly with a farmer at a local market or through a CSA. My question is how do I initiate the changes necessary at my grocery store to make more of what comes out of the ground available to eat?

I read this story and was shocked! Is this an issue in Europe as welll or no? Just xurious. It seems as though canned fruit and vegtables wouldn’t need to be perfect.
