The "foodie elitist" charge often levelled at Pollan is not accurate. I've met him, seen him speak, and read all but the latest book. Unfortunately (?) for him, the fan base that has propelled him to the top of the best sellers list does include some very vocal fans to whom the label might reasonably be applied. He is cited as the authority for a number of actions that go beyond anything he actually endorses in his writing.

#64.... a person has to break the rules on occasion. Breaking rules are a part of my life, but finding the good ones to live by is way funner.

Hi Carla,

While I can't speak to Howard Junker's mood, I can tell you that some folks feel that the kind of eating Michael Pollan, Alice Waters and others espouse (organic, sustainable, local etc.) can cost more than other food found in the supermarket.

As you correctly note, however, there are ways to eat well without breaking the budget.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how Michael Pollan's overriding suggestion that we eat real food is faddism. The author of Zyzzyva must be exceptionally cranky for him to believe this. And since Pollan does not tell me what to eat beyond that, what is elitist about it? Surely my beloved blackeyed peas and cornbread aren't suspect, are they?
