Asiya, Very beautifully written article. Though we've never met, we are working on similar projects, labors of love, only 20 miles from one another. You on the West side of the Caldecott tunnel, and me to the East in Contra Costa County. You are definitely an inspiration! Keep up the wondeful work. I'm foraging pears and persimmons this week throughout Concord and Walnut Creek. Sincerely, Anna Chan, The Lemon Lady. www.thelemonlady.blogspot.com

I recently lived in an apartment complex that had a pear tree and an apple tree growing on the grounds. What a delightful treat to make our own picker, harvest pears, and share them with our neighbors (we wouldn't want to take all of it).

i was just thinking today how wonderful it would be if we grew fruit trees wherever they would grow, and shared the produce. we could really feed our own communities, preserve the bounty for winter, and get to know our neighbors too. if each of us just planted a fruit tree in our front yard!

Reading articles like this encourages my understanding and admiration for the local food movement. In our desire to re-localize food chains and sustain our dietary needs through our own yards, urban foraging is an exciting sub-movement. Here in Portland, OR we have urbanedibles.com which uses Google Maps to mark the 400+ edible foods in the city. Like the author here suggests, I have gone on bike rides in Portland with the expressed purpose of foraging fruits. The second piece - creating barter communities - is just as important.

Thank you for publishing this article on urban foraging adventures, as I see this as a key factor to the local food movement.
