What a crazy day! I was shocked and SO pleased to see thousands of eager people gathered to talk and think about food. This was an amazing event - the lone shortcoming was that it lasted a mere day, and I felt like I wasn't able to go to as many workshops as I would have liked. Hopefully this is just the beginning of an ongoing discussion and an annual gathering.

This was indeed a wonderful conference. I was particularly pleased to see the concern for sustainable food production and global issues being balanced with the perspective of equal access. Instead of "How can we get the whole country to put down Bic Macs and eat organic?", we asked, "How can we ensure all people have access and opportunity to make healthy food choices?"

At times, the concern for organics can drown out the reality that 36 million Americans are food insecure. The sustainability movement depends on our ability to address poverty and end hunger. Who else will buy this food and make it the norm? I encourage the organizers of the conference in the days to come to keep this conversation going, and remember the importance of talking about sustainable solutions to hunger, moving past the charity response, and building bridges to healthy food for all people.
