I know a farmer who cried (literally) as he watched a very fertile section of farmland being covered over by a shopping mall back in the last century. Now that retail isn't so fertile, I hope that isn't happening as often. Solar panels should be going up all over the country, since the sun shines everywhere (except maybe Seattle). Energy is lost when we transmit is over large distances.

Jennifer,

I'm also concerned about the potential loss of good farm land to renewable energy, but I have to disagree with your indication that the deserts are a better place because they are "unproductive". Like food production, energy production should be local -- it's more secure, more reliable, and more efficient. There are plenty of rooftops and parking lots for solar panels. We don't need to put them on agricultural land or on good desert habitat.
